Below is an interview by the students of 1st ESO with Alyssa , our language assistant for this year 2023/24. I hope you are interested and arouse your curiosity:

NTERVIEW WITH ALYSSA. OUR LANGUAGE ASSISTANT:

1º ESO (Geography and History)

1) (Miguel and Arantxa) What do you like to do in your free time?

I usually watch movies or series, especially when a new one is out! It’s also therapeutic for me to do mindful walking outside if it’s not too cold.

2) (Lucía Requena) What are your favorite movies?

I really like the film adaptations of Little Women and The Little Prince.

3) (Álvaro) What are the main cultural differences between your country and Spain?

Extracurricular activities are as important as academics here in Spain, especially for kids. I think it helps a lot mainly in figuring out what you enjoy outside school and enhancing these skills while you’re still young. Respecting your elders is highly observed in our culture. We normally use terms before names as a sign of respect instead of just first-name basis.

4) (Yassin) What’s your favorite football team?

A lot may hate me for saying this but I’m not a fan of football and I haven’t watched a match in my entire life but this should be a good opportunity to open myself to the sport.

5) (Gemma) What´s your favorite brand of clothes?

I’m very interested in clothes because I enjoy dressing up. I think Mango, which is from Spain, has classic pieces with good quality at a reasonable price. I also recommend doing some shopping at second-hand shops or vintage stores because they have a lot of good stuff! We need to start taking care of the environment.

6) (Leyla) What do you like most about being a teacher here?

I’m very blessed to have students, teachers, and colleagues that I work with who are very kind and respectful to me. It makes my job easier because I have a good working environment. I also enjoy conversing with the students even outside of class.

7) (Paula) Where would you like to go on holiday?

I have a long list of places I want to visit here in Spain! I think Andalucía is a beautiful region. Asturias and San Sebastián are also on my list.

8) (David) What's your favorite song?

This is always the most difficult question to answer because I listen to a lot of genres and artists. But I think I would say The Beatles. Everyone in my family listens to them, and their songs are classics! It always reminds me of Sundays at home when I listen to them.

9) (Daniela) How many brothers and sisters do you have?

I have two older brothers and one older sister. I’m very close to all of them.

10) (Lucía Villote) When is your birthday?

I was born on the 31st of October. It’s Halloween!

11) (Joel) Are you married?

No, maybe after 10 years haha.

12) (Johana and Ana) Do you have any pets?

We had two family dogs named Oprah and Happy. Oprah recently passed away, and she was with us for 12 years.

13) What do you like the most about your city?

My city in the Philippines is actually called the “City of Golden Friendship.” I think from that you’ll probably know! The people there are very nice and warm. There are also cool cafes where you can hang out with your friends and try out some delicious food.

14) What is your favorite food?

I’m fond of soups and there’s a famous dish in the Philippines called Sinigang! I also like Spanish food like Arroz Negro and Jamón Ibérico.

15) What is your favorite outfit?

My friends tease me a lot but I do own a lot of black clothes! I love a good all-black outfit. You just can never go wrong with it.

16) What style of clothes do you normally wear?

I enjoy making a lot of mood boards so I can have an idea of what pieces are nice to combine with. I think I like casual sporty and streetwear styles. The most important thing is to feel comfortable with what you wear.

17) (Cristina and Lucas) Why did you come to Spain?

I have always wanted to live abroad and be independent. Since the Philippines and Spain share a lot of cultural similarities, I thought it was a good opportunity to explore the country and experience things I had only read about in textbooks at school.

18) What do you like about Spain?

I like almost everything in here! The food, the culture, and the festivals that you celebrate. I also appreciate how everyone is family oriented which is very important to me.

Tell us about your experience in the bilingual program during your time in IES Izpisua Belmonte

 Experiences about bilingual courses

My experience in bilingual has been very fun with lots of good memories but

also stressful moments.

I have been very comfortable with my classmates since there are only few of us

in class and we are very happy with each other.

The teachers have almost all been very kind and have tried to help you with

everything. (Ines Jimenez Ortega, 4º ESO)

I did not like my bilingual experience. Not everything was bad because there

were many good moments, but when we had to take an exam, everything was

more difficult because I didn't understand anything. I don't like the subjects in

English because it doesn't help me to know the history of Spain in English and

the math is not useful in English either. (Carolina Perez Toledo, 4º ESO)

My bilingual experience has been very interesting and has helped me a lot to

learn terms and phrases in English.

My teachers have been very good, like Anthony, Isabel and Alyssa. It is more

difficult, since the syllabuses were in English but we have learned a lot. And

nothing more, I don't regret having signed up for these 4 years. (Andres Morcillo

Pinar, 4º ESO)

I started bilingual in second grade, out of mere curiosity, at first it was quite

difficult for me to adapt to the subjects in english, the truth is that in the second

year of that I was very lucky with the teachers since they made the subjects

easier for us by giving some parts of the subject in Spanish, the only one that

was more difficult for me was physics and chemistry, later in the third year the

subjects were easy, I understood them without any problem, but there was a

teacher who was very strict and the exams were very difficult, and finally in the

fourth year it is becoming very easy for me (at the moment) I don't I recommend

that you become bilingual if you do not speak English well or moderately well

because it is going to be very difficult for you to understand the subjects, but if

you are good at it I recommend and if you have the opportunity to be bilingual,

that you become bilingual. (Natalia Navarro Cardos, 4º ESO)

My experience has been fantastic in bilingual. I started in first grade and I'm

probably in my last year. Like everything, sometimes I liked it more and other

times less, but it has helped me a lot to learn English. Of these four years, two

have given me a very good geography and history teacher but now he is gone.

Now there is a new teacher but I miss him. I have also taught mathematics,

plastics, geography, technology and physical education. I have also really liked

the teachers who know English who have come from abroad. I have learned a

lot with them. In short, it has been an unforgettable experience without taking

into account some details that I would have missed. (Hugo Saez Gordillo, 4º

ESO)

My experience in bilingual it was okay I learnt enough english. The subjects that

I had were history and geography, physics and chemistry, tecnology ,PE, Maths.

We did some projects, like a mockuol of an atomic model .....

We did a bilingual camp for 1 week with my class and we were with native

english people of Ireland and Australia...... This was my favourite trip.

I think that bilingual its very useful and Irecomend It a lot (Maria Cecilia

Rocabado Cespedes, 4ºESO)

My name is Raúl and I want to explain my experience in bilingual. I started the

bilingual at the 2nd of ESO, during that year I learned in Physics, Chemistry,

Technology and Physical education in English. We also went to a camp to learn

English. In third of ESO we studied subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Arts,

Physical Education and History in the English lenguage. In this year we learn in

inglish history, physical education ant mathematics. In this year I improve my

english and I meet english teachers fron countries that the english IS the oficial

lenguage. (Raul Garcia Lopez, 4º ESO)

This is my first course in bilingual, I decided to begin this year because I want to

have the B1, it will be so usefull in the future! It's not being so hard but I am bad

at maths and it is even harder in english. I'm good at english, but there is so

much I need to learn! (Ruben Perez Selles, 4ºA)

Hello, my name is Jesus and I am going to talk about my experience in my

experience in bilingual. I started bilingual in the first year of ESO, in that course

we taught geography and history, physical education and technology.

I really liked that course because it was my first course and I learned a loto f

english and made many fiends.

In second and third year I also learned a lot with teachers who are no longer at

this high school and iwould love for them to come back.

In second year we were taught physics and chemistry, technology, physical

education and english and in the tird year we taught art, physical education and

technology.

This is my last year in bilingual and I wish it wasn´´t because I like to learn

english. (Jesus Guirado Martinez, 4º ESO)

I have been in the bilingual program for more than three years, from the first

quarter of the first year to the second quarter of the fourth year. In general, it

has been quite pleasant, and the classes are very calm. Despite the fact that I

have learned a lot of English, the downside is that if your friends don't go to the

bilingual program, you may feel more isolated. It takes convincing to get them

to join. (Adrian Feliz Ferreras, 4th ESO)

I have been in the bilingual program since the third year of ESO. At first, it

seemed quite stressful, but you get used to the fact that most of the classes

and assignments are in English. This is my second year in the bilingual program,

and I plan to finish it. I recommend it to someone who is proficient in English

because you can achieve the B1 level in English. (Sergio Reolid Palacios, 4th

ESO)

A VISIT TO THE HISTORICAL CENTER.

Our students and classmates from the third bilingual course, made a visit to the old town of Hellín with our History and Geography teachers, visiting the remains of the old fortress and medieval castle of Muslim origin built between the 10th and 11th centuries.

We climbed the medieval slopes and stairs where Muslims, Christians and Jews lived together in medieval times.

We enjoyed wonderful views; we saw the old fountains today located in the Entreculturas school and a stone that fell during the Lisbon earthquake of 1755 that was felt in our city.

We passed through the narrowest street in Hellín, where it is a tradition to touch both walls with your hands and kiss each other and listen a legend that has it the Emperor Charles V of Austria slept in an inn on his way from Cartagena to Madrid.

Finally we pass through one of the old doors that gave access to the medieval city, the Alcaraz´s door, near the Gothic Church of the Assumption. Thanks to Barbara Muñoz, our teacher archaeologist and Paco Piñera for joining us on this excursion.

AN INTERVIEW WITH ISABEL ADESKO, (January, 2023).

We are going to interview our new teacher Isabel Adesko. We will ask her an interesting question in Geography class. Write your name and ask a question without repeating it. Thanks!

Question (Adrián). How is the United States?

Isabel: The United States is a very big and diverse country so that is a hard question to answer. But I can tell you that New York City is very big and busy. There are always so many people around and so much to do. It is very loud but also exciting.

Question (Hugo). Do you have any brothers or sisters? Where is your best friend?

Isabel: I'm from New York, but my family is from California. I don't have brothers or sisters. My best friend is from China.

Question (Andrés). Do you have any hobbies?

Isabel: I have lots of hobbies, but right now I spend my time knitting. I really love making clothes and altering the clothes I already have to make them more interesting.

Question (Raúl). What is your favorite food?

Isabel: I love pretty much all foods so it’s hard to choose a favorite but I would have to say pasta. In the winter though, I love to eat soup. I eat soup at least three times a week.

Question (Natalia). What prompted you to come to Spain to work in a high school?

Isabel: I have always wanted to live abroad and through watching movies I fell in love with Spain before I even came. I also want to go to school for teaching when I go back to the United States so I thought this would be a nice way to start off.

Question (Inés). What was your favorite subject at School?

Isabel: My favorite subject in school was always History (and Art). I ended up studying History in University but I still do a lot of art in my own time.

Question (Sergio). Do you like the history of World War II?

Isabel: I am interested in the history of WWII, but I am more interested in the first World War because it was so unprecedented, it started over a minor incident, and it was the first war in which many modern weapons and other technologies were used.

Question (Rafa). What is your favorite place or city in Spain? Why?

Isabel: I haven’t gotten the chance to explore much of Spain yet, but I went to Granada for Christmas and it was really beautiful. However, Albacete has my heart, I really love living here and every time I leave I’m excited to come back.

Question (Alberto). What has been your best experience in Spain?

Isabel: So far my best experience in Spain has been getting to meet people here. Everyone is very friendly and open which I really appreciate.

Question (Jesús). What is the most beautiful place you have visited?

Isabel: Since I have been in Spain, the most beautiful place I have visited is Granada, but that is also one of the only places I’ve been. Ask me again in 5 months.

Question (Cecilia). Do you want to travel around the world? Which countries? Why?

Isabel: I would love to travel around the world. One of my best friends is from China so I would love to go visit her there and travel around Asia with her.

Question (Carolina). With whom did you spend your Christmas Holidays?

Isabel: I spent the holidays by myself in Granada.

A visit from France

This year we received again a visit from France, 29 students and 4 teachers from the Institut Lemonier came to our school.

They were very busy days.

The first day (November 23) we stayed at our high school, first we were  playing mathematical puzzles like Soma cube or tangram, later we made a workshop of t-shirts using nasrid designs. During the afternoon students went to a treasure hunt to know our city in a playful way.

The second day (November 24) we went to La Alhambra to see the Nasrid tesellations and the palace.

The third day (November 25) we stayed at the high school, designed posters of our trip and an interesting origami workshop . Finally we went to a mathmatical walk (even we had a guided visit to the bullring)
